Test Pattern for PTE Course

 

General and Academic

  • This is the first and the longest part of the test.
  • Its duration is 54-67 minutes.
  • You are tested on your Speaking and Writing skills.
  • The responses can be recorded only once.
  • This section comprises of 8 different question types.
    • Type 1 – Personal Introduction: Here you have to give information about yourself. You are given 25 seconds to read the prompt and then, 30 seconds to record your response. Although this section is not scored, it is sent, along with your scores, to your preferred institutions.
    • Type 2 – Read Aloud: In this section you have to read a written text aloud. You have 30-40 seconds to read the text  and prepare, after which you will hear a short tone and microphone will appear on the screen, you will then be required to speak clearly and record your answer. If you remain silent for more than 3 seconds the recording will stop automatically.
    • Type 3 – Repeat Sentence: For this question type, you have to repeat the sentence you hear. After the audio stops, you have to repeat what you heard immediately (There is no short tone).
    • Type 4 – Describe Image: In this section, you have to describe the image on your computer screen. You get 25 seconds to study the image and prepare your response. After the short tone, you have 40 seconds to speak and record your response.
    • Type 5 – Retell Lecture: For this question type you are required to listen/watch the audio/video clip which can last up to 90 seconds. After it is over, you get 10 seconds to prepare. Once you hear the short tone, you have to retell what you originally heard within 40 seconds. However, while the audio is playing, you can make notes on the provided erasable board.
    • Type 6 – Answer Short Question: Here you have to reply to the asked question in one or a few words.
    • Type 7 – Summarize Written Text: In this part, you have to read a text of up to 300 words. Then you get 10 minutes to write the summary of the text in a single sentence, up to 75 words long. Keep in mind to include the main idea/points of the text in your summary.
    • Type 8 – Essay: This is the last section of part 1. Here you have to write an essay in response to a given prompt/topic. You have 20 minutes to complete this task wherein you are required to write a minimum of 200 words, not exceeding 300 words.
  • The duration of this section is 30 minutes.
  • It tests your ability to read Academic English.
  • This Section consists of 5 types of questions.
    • Type 1 – Fill in the blanks: In this part text will appear on your screen with several blanks. Beside each blank is a button with a drop-down list. You are required to select the option you feel is best suited to fill in the gap.
    • Type 2 – Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: In this section, you have to read a text up to 300 words long and then select all responses that you think are correct from the list of given options.
    • Type 3 – Re-order Paragraph: This section requires you to arrange the jumbled text boxes which appear on the screen by dragging them across.
    • Type 4 – Fill in the blanks: You are given a text up to 80 words in length which has some missing words. A list of words is given in a blue box on your screen which have to be used to fill in the gaps. There are more words than gaps so all words will not be used.
    • Type 5 – Multiple Choice, Single Answer: In this part, you have to read a text of about 300 words and answer the Multiple choice question. Several options appear on the screen and you have to choose only one correct option.
