Test Pattern for IELTS

General and Academic

  • The First module to be attempted is Listening.
  • A listening test has 4 sets of recordings which may be in different accents, Australian, British or North American.
  • The test is divided into 4 sections, with 10 questions in each section.
  • The questions are in the same order as played in the recording.
  • The recording is played only once, but gives you time in between questions.
  • The recording is played for 25 to 30 minutes, after which you get 10 minutes to transfer your answers to your answer sheet.
  • All 40 answers carry one mark each, there is no negative marking but correct spellings are mandatory or you will lose marks.
  • The second module is reading.
  • It comprises of excerpts from articles from various sources in the form of passages.
  • It is a one hour test and there is no extra time for transferring answers so you are advised to keep doing the same as you complete each passage.
  • There are a total of 3 passages to be attempted. Each passage has 13 to 14 questions with a sum of 40 questions in all.
  •  You should ideally spend 20 min on each passage.
  • The objective questions are of various types.
  • You can choose the sequence of passages to be attempted as per your comfort.
  • Writing is the third and final module of the day.
  • Its duration is 60 minutes in which you have to complete 2 Tasks.
  • It is a test of your ability to express yourself in Written English.
  • Task one is Report / Letter writing depending on Academic / General Test option.
    • As it carries less marks, you are advised to spend not more than 20 minutes on this task.
    • You are required to write a summary of at least 150 words describing the given diagrammatical information (In the case of the General Exam your letter  should be based on the 3 to 4 pointers mentioned).
  • Task 2 is the Essay section which has to cover a minimum of 250 words in response to questions or arguments on a General topic.
    • Spend a maximum of 40 minutes on the essay.
    • Planning your essay or making points before commencing to write is strongly recommended.
  • Task 2 or Essay is common for both Academic and General Exam.
  • Speaking exam usually takes place within 7 days of your LRW exam.
  • It is a face to face conversation which is evaluated by a certified examiner.
  • The questions are based on real life situations and pertain to judge your ability in Spoken English.
  • The duration of the test is 12 to 15 minutes.
  • It is a One on One conversation which is recorded at the same time.
  • The test is divided into three sections: Introduction round, Cue cards, Discussion / Cross questioning round.
